How to Make a Wood Herringbone Pattern on Your Wall or Ceiling

What Is a Herringbone Pattern?

A traditional herringbone pattern is made from uniform-length runs grouped into treads. A run is one straight section of the pattern. A tread is a group of runs turned at a 45-degree angle and stacked vertically.

As the pattern moves across the wall, each tread alternates direction: left, then right, then left again. That back-and-forth movement creates the classic “W” or “M” rhythm people recognize in herringbone floors, walls, ceilings, and framed feature panels.

Start With the Design Decision: How Many Treads?

The biggest choice in a herringbone wall or ceiling is the number of treads. Most people choose an even number so the pattern resolves in balanced left/right pairs.

Fewer treads create longer, calmer runs. More treads create shorter, busier runs with more movement. For a 10-foot wall, four or six treads usually works well. Eight treads can be great for a lobby, entry, or high-energy feature wall, but it may feel too active in a bedroom or quieter space.

The Equations Behind the Calculator

The calculator uses two simple equations. Keep every measurement in inches when you calculate run length.

  • Run Length = ((Wall Width × 1.4142) + Plank Width) ÷ Number of Treads
  • Square Feet to Order = ((Wall Width × Wall Height) ÷ 144) × (1 + Waste Factor)

The number 1.4142 comes from the diagonal geometry of a 45-degree layout. The waste factor gives you room for angled cuts, layout adjustments, and the natural variation that makes real wood look good on the wall.

Single-Piece Runs vs. Multi-Piece Runs

A single-piece run gives the pattern a cleaner, more classic look. stikwood.momes in lengths up to 48 inches, so if you want each run to be made from a single plank, choose a tread count that keeps your run length at 48 inches or less.

A multi-piece run can work beautifully too, especially on wider walls where longer runs are needed. The key is consistency: every run in the pattern needs to finish at the same length so the herringbone rhythm stays crisp.

Tools You’ll Need

Tools That Make Herringbone Easier

You do not need a specialty product to make a herringbone layout, but a few measuring and cutting tools make the project easier. For angled layouts, a digital angle finder, angle guide, or laser level can help you check your 45-degree lines before you commit to cutting.

How to Install a Herringbone Stikwood Pattern

  1. Mark your centerline. Draw a vertical centerline on the wall. If you’re using an odd number of treads, your layout line may not be the exact center of the wall; for example, a three-tread layout starts one-third of the way across.

  2. Create your 45-degree guides. Draw a level horizontal line 3 feet from the ceiling. Mark 3 feet out each way from your centerline, then draw lines from the top center point through those marks. This gives you two 45-degree layout lines.

  3. Cut your first board. Cut the first board to your calculated run length, then mark the center of one edge. If you’re using multi-piece runs, choose a longer board for the first placement.

  4. Place the first board carefully. Align the board with your 45-degree guide and line up the center mark with your layout line. This first board sets the pattern, so take your time.

  5. Build the first tread pair. Place the next two boards to begin the alternating direction. One board will need a 45-degree end cut.

  6. Continue the pattern. Complete the first two treads, checking the edges often to make sure the pattern stays straight. Cut boards as needed, keeping your cuts at 45 degrees.

  7. Repeat across the wall. Continue tread by tread until the pattern is complete, then roll each plank firmly with a J roller for strong adhesive contact.

Planning Note

If your calculated run length is longer than the Stikwood plank length you want to use, you can either increase the number of treads or build each run from multiple pieces. The cleanest option is the one that keeps every run consistent.
